Although it's technically the last book in the Patternmaster series of science fiction novels, Oliva Butler wrote this one first and then went back and filled in the prequels later.Just like the others in the series, I ripped through this book in only a few sittings punctuated by academic reading. It's incredible how well the details of this story fit in with the at the time unwritten prequels which speaks to the huge expansive vision that Butler had when she came up with the story and the world. I really liked the character of Teray, but I LOVED Amber. Her desire to remain independent and not tied to a man was awesome. I loved how their relationship developed, and the way Butler described their mental interactions with each other. Because I had read the other books in the series, I was pretty sure I knew how it was going to end but I still was on the edge of my seat anyway.
Overall, the Patternmaster series is really interesting and quite disturbing at times. While these are deeply violent books, almost no physical fighting occurs. Most of the confrontations happen between the minds of the telepaths. The way that Butler is able to describe epic "mind battles" and make it seem suspenseful is incredible. I also liked reading this book and seeing how the events of Clay's Ark tied in because at the time that story seemed pretty random.
If you're only going to read one book in the series, read Wild Seed because it's the most mature of the stories in terms of thoughtful meditation on race, sex, and power dynamics.

All of Ms. Octavia Butler's books at the best.
Book was in good condition-hardback is hard to find. Big fan of Octavia Bultler's early work.
Great series of books! OnceI found the first book I couldn't stop reading.the series even engulfed my 8 y/o! A must read.
Okay, five stars. Some of you may be all really? Five Stars? Yes given one consideration. It was her first novel. And man did she have one hell of a world. The most lifelike and entertaining world since Dune. In fact it reminds me quite a bit like Children of Dune. So five stars. Great writing, i would have liked more characters but the story is tight, presents some great theories as to mankinds ability to be even more ferocious as we evolve as opposed to the Gene Rodenberry theory. Or really that we may evolve and still retain our ferociousness. Now i was never a fan of Kindred but after reading this and Dawn i can put Butler in my perhaps my top five sci fi writers of all time. She may be six. So i am ordering the prequals right after this. Oh and if you dont like it, dont worry you can still read it in a day. Literally.
No matter how many times I read it, it remains as fresh and engaging as the first time I picked it up.
I would recommendghis book to teenagers through adult. Especially those who may be African American and think there are no AA science fiction writers
Octavia Butler was a brilliant humanistic writer, almost unknown to all but the most hardcore science fiction fans. Critically acclaimed, she had a unique and yet humanely idealistic view of the characters she created. A formidable talent, in today's world her writing is more relevant than it was even in her own day, nearly 40 years ago. I suspect that if she were writing now, she would be hugely popular, and if I didn't know that her books had been written decades ago, I wouldn't be able to tell. If you love science fiction, beautifully drawn characters, and complex and far-reaching lives, read anything you can find of hers; I can almost guarantee you will be richly rewarded!
