The Fairy Mistake Princess Tales Gail Carson Levine Mark Elliott Books

I am reviewing this on behalf of my daughter, and as my perspective of what engaging literacy might be. The book had arrived in the afternoon, and when I got home in the evening - it was nearly completely digested. She was able to explain the journeys, the relationships, and was able to anticipate the "mistake". Not sure if this is correct, but she was thinking, and thinking deeply.

I see the book as a success, therefore. If it can grab a young mind, offer a literary journey, and provoke thought - why not.

My daughter reads a lot, so I feel is a strong reader for her age. She is 9 so enjoys such genres of literature. So, judge accordingly. For such an audience I think it will work, and if not, very little lost.

The Fairy Mistake Princess Tales Gail Carson Levine Mark Elliott Books Reviews

Another in the fun and fanciful line of "The Princess Tales," this adaptation of the old tale "Diamonds and Toads" is more upbeat and cunning than the original but still stays true to much of the original story. "The Fairy's Mistake" shows us what happens when a fairy grants the kind sister with a 'good' gift (gemstones appear from her mouth) and the cruel sister with a 'bad' gift (frogs, spiders and other critters crawl out of her mouth) -- and the good intentions go awry. Quick read for all ages.
With cute humour and plenty of magic,Levine tells the tale of 2 sisters, one nice, one selfish.A well-meaning fairy gives the nice sis a 'gift'....She will spew diamonds from her mouth every time she speaks. But this so-called blessing causes everyone to take advantage! The nasty sister is 'punished' by being enchanted to spew out insects every time she speaks(it's a good book, honestly.)But her punishment turns into something she enjoys as she uses it to her own advantage to terrorize others. It's actually not a gross book,My review is grosser than the book.It is a charming read as is The Princess Test.
One of my favorite genres of books is that of the "retold fairy tale" -- someone taking a classic fairy tale and putting a new twist on it, either by altering the setting, telling the tale from another point of view, telling what happened AFTER "happily ever after," or simply giving the characters different sensibilities. I've found plenty of good and entertaining books this way -- Shannon Hale's "Rapunzel's Revenge," Marissa Meyer's "Cinder," Mercedes Lackey's "Firebird" and "The Black Swan," and Eowyn Ivey's "The Snow Child," to name a few. But Gail Carson Levine's version of the Cinderella tale, "Ella Enchanted," is one of the best retellings of the Cinderella tale I've ever read, and when I came across her novella collection "The Princess Tales," I knew I had to read more.

"The Fairy's Mistake" is an extremely short book -- less than a hundred pages, easily finished in an afternoon -- but it's still a fun and clever take on a somewhat lesser-known fairy tale, "Toads and Diamonds," and it's not only funny, it's a good example of how "happily ever after" may not work out as planned.

Sisters Rosella and Myrtle live with their mother in the village of Snettering-On-Snoaks, and while Rosella is sweet and kind, Myrtle is headstrong and often rude. When Rosella does a good deed for Ethelinda, a fairy in disguise, and Myrtle subsequently rebuffs said fairy, they're each rewarded with what Ethelinda sees as an appropriate reward -- jewels fall out of Rosella's mouth whenever she speaks, while Myrtle spits up bugs, snakes, and frogs whenever she speaks. Ethelinda is pleased with her work, especially when Rosella's gift attracts the attentions of a prince and Myrtle's curse earns the disgust of the entire village. But when it becomes clear that the prince only loves Rosella for her jewels and is a selfish greedy pig to boot, while Myrtle learns to work her curse to her advantage and is having the time of her life, Ethelinda realizes she's screwed up, and has to step in again to set things right.

As stated before, "The Fairy's Mistake" is a very short read, far shorter than "Ella Enchanted." But given that "Toads and Diamonds" is a short and simple tale, the short length of the book works. There's not a lot of pointless filler to the tale, and rather than get bogged down in needless details the story moves at a brisk clip, never once lagging. The characters are a bit flat, but then, the original story didn't exactly flesh them out either.

The greatest strength of this book is that, like other books in the series, it never takes itself seriously. It pokes fun at fairy-tale conventions without falling back on the pop-culture references that cheapened the "Shrek" movies. The prince's cluelessness can make one want to smack him over the head, but he does show development over the course of the book, learning to be fair and generous. Rosella, too, develops some, growing a backbone and learning to stand up for herself. Myrtle remains rather flat, however, and doesn't change much over the course of the book. This may be a bit off-putting to people who were expecting her to earn some kind of comeuppance, but at least she provides some humorous snark and does come to her sister's aid at the right time.

A fun, light little number that pokes fun at some of the classic fairy tales, this is a good short read, especially for children who liked "Ella Enchanted" and want more stories in the same vein. Also recommended in this series are "The Princess Test" and "Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep," retellings of "The Princess and the Pea" and "Sleeping Beauty" respectively.
witty and humorous tale of unintended consequences, which applies to lots of other areas!
Hi this is a cute parody of a Grimm brother's tale here the princess who drops gems whenever she speaks finds it more of a curse than a blessing, and the one cursed with spitting disgusting bugs finds ways to turn that to her advantage. The humor is cute, if a bit forced.
Wonderful re-write of a well-known fairy tale. Gail Carson Levine puts an interesting twist to the story that makes it a lot of fun.
This little fairy tail goes in a way you won't expect. It goes the logical way. I read it, gave it to my daughter to read. She read it to her friends kids. It is now the favorite Fairy story at her house when she had kids visit!
