I had never heard of this novel/series, but after reading Jurassic Park a while back I got on a bit of a dinosaur kick and wanted to see what else was out there. Options are limited. I came across this book on accident, as I have a habit of looking over books without covers (there is a joke in there somewhere....). It took a couple chapters get me interested, but once it had my full attention I couldn't stop reading it, and when I had to stop for, you know, life stuff, I kept thinking about it. Great plot development, great characters, unique story mechanics (especially in relation to language). The visual descriptions painted a wonderful picture and I often found myself pausing abruptly to imagine the scenarios being described. As soon as I was finished, I logged on Amazon and ordered the second and third novel of the series, which I am working through now.

I knocked a single star off for 2 reasons relating specifically to the kindle version. One, editing. Whoever scanned this didn't bother to proof read as they worked. Repeat sentences, stuff like that. The other problem, is apparently the print version had some illustrations to assist with some of the descriptions. I would have very much liked to have seen those because there are some parts that get a little confusing without visual reference, prepare to memorize quite a bit.

Ok, and now I'll get into the part that'll really push that buy now button for ya; dinosaur/human relations. Yup, some good 'ol fashion disgusting reptile-mammal loooooooovin'. You're welcome.

While reading this, I was continually reminded of Tolstoy's well-known sentence "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” The families in the book enjoyed fabulous wealth and their members often had rewarding and creative careers, but oh, brother... what unhappiness! Murder, suicide, mental illness, financial disasters, etc., etc. You name it. The only exception was Jean Stein's own family, and perhaps that's just because she didn't talk about it (and even for them there was a kidnapping threat). As a third-generation native of Los Angeles (since escaped), I'm perpetually amazed by the goings-on there. My father was a reporter in Los Angeles in the thirties, and he used to regale us with stories of the rich and famous and their quirks. Stein's book gives us a fascinating picture, with all the important gossip, in a rather unusual format quotations (often less than a page) from people who actually were there are cleverly strung together in a way that draws the reader inexorably along. Read it, then read some Raymond Chandler, and then go see L.A. Confidential.
I read this book when it first came out back in the 80's and loved it. I foolishly sold my copy years ago, not expecting it to go out of print. I was so excited to see it available as an ebook. I was sorry to hear that Mr Harrison had passed away.

Mr Harrison did extensive research to write a credible story. Asking the question "what would the world be like if the KT comet had never struck the earth?" sets the premise of the story. The dinosaurs would be the dominant species on earth and would be masters of biological science. If you're familiar with Star Trek - Voyager, this book is similar to the episode "Distant Origin."

If you are a Sci Fi or Fantasy fan, you will really enjoy this book from one of the old masters!
I found this a fascinating account of the lives of a small group of people. I was familiar with the stories of Jennifer Jones and Jack Warner. I especially liked the author's technique of telling the stories in the words of different narrators.
I ordered the book notwithstanding an adverse review in the New York Times.
I noticed that a later review in the magazine section was quite different.
Only because it is heavy on Jennifer Jones. It saved the book for me.
I recently picked up the kindle version of West of Eden as I was nostalgic for the good read after 20+ years from reading it the first time. Originally it was extremely novel, and wrote of dystopian times before it was vogue; detailing a world where dinosaurs became sentient and humans struggled to survive. Today it still carries the same weight, and I'm more able to pick out the society commentary between the lines. How we humans burn and exhaust everything that we touch, how we no longer live one with our environment. If you haven't read it, it's worth a read, and you'd never know this was written so many years ago.
As a native of Southern California, I've heard the majority of these events and even knew some of the people and places involved. What made this book unique and fascinating was having so many of the people involved tell how not only how they themselves were Impacted by these events but also the generations that that followed dealt with the fallout.
Jean Stein was a master of storytelling through the voices of those she interviewed. That she knew just WHO to interview and how to edit their input to create a compelling narrative was her genius. She brings together stories of families whose names you might recognize from street names in Hollywood, but whose sordid or tragic history is less known. You can feel the sea breeze and squint from the glare of the stucco Malibu cottage where one of her subjects lived in seclusion. But in Stein's treatment, that same breeze and sunshine feels oppressive, not invigorating. Hollywood for the side players (and even for the stars, in the case of Jennifer Jones, who is prominent in the pages) is not a happy place. This book aligns with the Hollywood of Karina Longworth's "You Must Remember This" podcast, for the untold history of Hollywood's first century.
