This is book 2 in the Rougement series and it’s a good one. Set in 1870-73, this is the story of Andrew Tilmore, Lord Preston, dubbed “The King of Threadneedle Street” for his prowess at making money. He’s clever and mentally adroit… and determined to have the girl he has loved since his youth. But Alysia Villier, illegitimate daughter of Andrew’s father’s mistress, is not his family’s choice.

Alysia understands his family’s rejection of her and respects their wishes, but Andrew cares not. He means to have her as his wife and shows up wherever she is, determined to protect his interests. His clever power plays designed to make her his kept me entertained. And, since Alysia can’t resist him, there are lots of steamy scenes.

A well-written story of a push me-pull me romance wherein Andrew gets what he wants. I loved the characters and the back and forth. There’s not much history or politics in this one, or glimpses into everyday Victorian life, but I enjoyed the well-researched look into the financial dealings of Victorian London. And there is lots of gossip to savor.

I do recommend reading A Song for Sophia, book 1, before this one as many characters from that story show up midway through this one and, without descriptions, you might be left wondering who they are.

The heroine of this story refused to marry the hero because her mom was a courtesan and the hero was a Lord. Although his family had raised her, they did not want him to marry her for the same reason. Only when he got into financial trouble and was cast out from high society would they consider her as his wife. Well, I would have told them to go to the devil right at the beginning if I were her. There was a happily ever after eventually but she should have stood up to his family because he truly loved and needed her in his life. The story is well written and contains interesting facts about finance and politics prominent at that time.
Very engaging and all around well-done HR; the second book in the Rougement series, and my second time reading this novel. I liked the first book (Song for Sophia) slightly more simply because I loved the feisty heroine and there was much more action of the swashbuckling type, but this one is still not to be missed. Here, you get the story of a financial genius (Lord Preston, who has a cameo in book 1) who fights to win his childhood love, Alysia, who he grew up in the same house with. In my opinion, Densley competes with the best authors in the genre and I highly recommend this series. This can be read as a standalone. Now I'm off to read the story of Helena's HEA in Beauty and the Spymaster!
I found this story to be confusing at times, though I enjoyed it, I just was baffled here and there. The first few chapters seemed to have been written to illustrate to the reader the author’s illustrious vocabulary.

Also I was lost in the numerous amount of people off and on throughout the entire book.

Alysia, a young illegitimate woman of 18 years was managing a large house, acting as a steward on a large estate and was also a tutor to a near genius. Oops, almost forgot, a fantastic artist and beautiful. What a paragon! Even for a work of fiction, it is far fetched!

Andrew at 21 was an expert investor on the stock market, shipping magnate, etc. Of course handsome with a physique like a god. He needed to stand up to his mother and demand that she stop pushing marriageable women at him.

Alysia’s mother had been the mistress of Andrew’s father. The father was Alysia’s guardian after her mother passed away. Alysia and Andrew grew up together. Nothing was ever mentioned how Andrew’s mother felt about having the daughter of her husband’s mistress living with them and managing the house and estate.

This is the longest review I have written. I found the story confusing at times and much too complicated. For instance, Andrew’s relationship with Lady Langton. Lady Langton saying to him that they had to marry since they were living in sin. Yet Andrew saying he was abstinent that he loved and will marry Alysia.
