This story completes my collection of Theodore Sturgeon, one of the great Sci-fi writers from the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Strange crystals regularly fall to Earth and the results make this a great read. Lucky to find this in hardback edition in shrink wrap so it was well-protected. The only other time I have seen this story was in a very old paperback edition. This is the complete story. The old paperback was just an excerpt. Another great story from the same author is 'More Than Human'.

The Dreaming Jewels Gollancz Collectors' Editions Theodore Sturgeon 9780575071407 Books Reviews

this was wonderful in the 60's and it's wonderful now. sturgeon never misses and this one creeps up and stays in your lap. you can see and taste the atmosphere, which i have found to be a rare thing, bradbury always did it well too. try it. you'll like it.
Always creates an emotional connection with his characters
Which is misleading, but that's what it was called when I bought it in paperback back in the 1970s. Horton "Horty" Bluett is the adoptive son of a judge who did it for political reasons, but neither of his parents really give a hoot about him. Then he's caught by school bullies eating ants and turned in to the principal, who expels him. There's hell to pay when he gets home and he runs away. He hitches a ride on a passing truck which takes him to a whole new life as a carnival performer. He enters a world where being "a little weird" is the norm, and discovers the three best friends he's ever had in his life. As well as meeting a man who makes the evil in his adoptive father seem mild by comparison. Judge Armand Bluett is just a harsh, uncaring man, while Horty's boss Pierre "Maneater" Monetre is a disgraced doctor who wants to destroy the world. Maneater's plans are subtle, based on Robin Cook-level biological science that got him through med school. So it's not like Horty and his new friends can call the FBI.
I first read this book decades ago, and the opening line has stuck with me. What a joy to finally locate and reread this tale. Horty is a wonderful character, and his adventures are well worth following. One of the twists I like is that we have so many good carnies. I would say a lot more about the book, but it contains so many twists, I'd just fill this review with spoilers. Sturgeon is a master storyteller.
Having read Sturgeon's Some of Your Blood a few years back, I've been on the lookout for more affordable Sturgeon books. Earlier this year, this one was on sale, and adding the narration was only a couple of bucks more, so I jumped on it. Luckily, I was very pleased with my decision.

This story was nothing at all like Some of Your Blood. But with an opening line of "They caught the kid doing something disgusting out under the bleachers at the high school stadium.", how could anyone not continue with the tale?

This book is difficult to categorize. An horrific, dark science fiction tale, with humor, humanity and social commentary-these words work well to describe this story. It also seemed timeless, never once did I feel that I was listening to something that was written in the 50s.

I liked this book, I liked it a lot. If anyone out there has any other Sturgeon recommendations, please let me know, because I'm impressed with what I've read so far!
This highly imaginative sci-fi tale is a must-read if you like dark sci-fi with a lot of twists and surprises. It starts out with an 8-year-old boy, Horty, who’s caught doing “something disgusting” under some bleachers and the story takes off from there. (You’ll learn what Horty was doing and why he behaved like this as you get into the story.) If you like stories with offbeat plots and equally offbeat characters, this sci-fi yarn is for you. Enjoy!
If you don't know Sturgeon, you don't know what a great SF author is. And this is one of Sturgeon's greatest tales

This is one of his best tales. It is well written and its ending a surprise.

Its twists and turns, the characters' ups and downs, withdrawals, returns, and commitments are believable. They feel like normal human beings facing insurmountable obstacles to life, though many of the characters are not normal in any sense.
This story completes my collection of Theodore Sturgeon, one of the great Sci-fi writers from the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Strange crystals regularly fall to Earth and the results make this a great read. Lucky to find this in hardback edition in shrink wrap so it was well-protected.
