“Comedy Secrets; How to Be a Funny Guy (or Gal)” is a short, straightforward book on comedy. Author Cliff Richardson breaks down comedy into two rules and explains, using examples and video clips, how the rules hold true in many types of comedy. The book deals more about the psychology of what makes things funny to people. It is information that is useful to anyone who wants to learn how to tell a joke or make a funny video but doesn't understand why certain things make people laugh while something similar might not. He shows that there is a fine line between comedy and just plain nonsense.
The book is very short but it's loaded with links to video clips that prove the point of what Richardson is trying to convey. He talks about a clip then you click on the provided link to watch and analyze it. Each clip is like a mini lesson and it was indeed fun watching the large selection of clips he included. I read the book as an Apple iBook and it worked flawlessly on an iPad. I had no problem connecting to any of the links.
The information contained in the e-book is pretty basic stuff. It doesn't prepare you to go on stage and do a stand-up comedy act but that is not its intention. It is merely an analyses as to why humans find things funny and how you can incorporate these facts into your jokes, and yes, even your stand up comedy act.
I recommend it to anyone who is just starting out as a comedy writer, jokester or are just curious as to why jokes, physical comedy and funny videos make us laugh. You'll walk away with a better understanding of how to be a funnier person or at least possibly figure out why you aren't funny!
